What is Mental Skill Training (MST)?

 

Mental skill training (MST) derives from the field of sport & performance psychology. It entails evidence-based training and tools that assist all athletes and performers by building mental toughness, increasing resilience, understanding how to manage thoughts & emotions effectively, and increasing physical performance through the accomplishment of goals & being more consistent in their mental game. MST breaks down & addresses confidence, motivation, focus, goal-setting, and performance anxiety, also helping athletes & performers be more resilient when they face setbacks or challenges, to include performing under pressure.

Founded by Dr. Gabe Farias, Apex Mentality Performance Consulting aims to help athletes, performers (Military & First-responders), and coaches with the mental, physical , as well as, nutritional aspect of sport and performance. Gabe’s overall aim encompasses a triad of services that focus on the individual as a whole, in a holistic manner.

Here’s what I’ll tell you, it is a complex beast that can either be used as an asset to your daily life & performance, or it can be known and used as your weakest point. Most people don’t realize the amount of control they truly have over their mind and with MST it becomes clear. You can gain that control so your mind works for you and not against you. Mental toughness is a psychological state that needs to be built, it doesn’t just happen.

As athletes, performers, & first-responders, you all understand how important it is to train your body. You need to be physically ready for your next performance, your next competition, the next time you suit up. Bottom line, it’s more than essential, it’s a must. But how often, do you take the time to dedicate towards building up your mind? You see, the brain is just like any other muscle in your body, it needs to be worked in order for it to grow and adapt. As a first-responder, you face high-stress situations on a daily basis. Mental skill training (MST) can help train your mind to be an asset, rather than a weakness. The moment you put that uniform on, it’s game time. It requires you to be on your toes & mentally ready for anything that can happen. This MST curriculum focuses on enhancing mental toughness and building resilience within the individual. It’s geared towards helping you stay focused under pressure, increasing your emotional regulation, and keeping you in control of your thoughts when it matters most.
